She also says that it is useful to prevent or even cure many diseases. She may even show you some practical demonstration about how that “miracle alkaline water machine” removes pesticides and other harmful contaminants. You are getting convinced that it is very much helpful and you are ready to spend a huge amount to grab that miracle machine. BUT, think again, Do you really need alkaline water machine? Does it really help you prevent or cure any disease? So, here we will discuss about what is alkaline water, Is it really helpful?, Do you need a machine to prepare alkaline water? What is Alkaline water ?

Water or any chemical substance can broadly be divided in three types, acidic, neutral and alkaline. Now what determines the type of water, whether it is acidic, neutral or alkaline, depends upon pH level of the water. pH level or pH scale is a parameter to measure the amount of free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in the water. Water with more free hydrogen ions is considered acidic and water with more free hydroxyl ions is considered alkaline. The pH scale range is from 0 to 14, where 7 is neutral. Water with pH of less than 7 is acidic, while pH of greater than 7 is alkaline.

Is alkaline water really helpful?

A hype has been created around alkaline water in recent years as if it was a panacea. It is gaining popularity as a new health trend. According to marketers of Alkaline machines, water prepared in these machines create alkaline environment in your body. They claim that any chronic illnesses can not persist in an alkaline environment, so you can be cured of any disease as they claim. The alkaline water may help in some diseases but it is definitely not a one cure for all. Let’s check, is alkaline water really good for you. In a small study , it was found that Alkaline water, especially pH 8.8 alkaline water makes human pepsin permanently inactive. Thus consumption of alkaline water may have therapeutic benefits for patients with acid reflux. But, the water used in this study was artesian well natural alkaline water. The alkaline water produced in alkaline machine may not give the same effect. The reason behind it is, the natural alkaline water contains enough minerals, that may not be there in machine produced alkaline water. Most machines simply increase pH value, but does not add any minerals in it. Machines heavily depend on quality of input water. If your input water lacks minerals then that water may be alkaline in nature but may not be that much beneficial as compared to natural alkaline water. Also, please note that if you want to use alkaline water, it should be in the range of 8 to 10, and not above it.

Who should use alkaline water ?

In general, anybody can use alkaline water in moderate quantity. There are little or no evidence of curing any chronic illnesses. It may neutralize bowl acid, aid in proper digestion, boost immunity and may reduce visible symptoms of ageing . In a small study, it was found that alkaline water may be useful in treatment of IBS ( Irritable Bowl Syndrome ). If you are suffering from IBS , you can give it a try.

How to know , if you have Irritable Bowl Syndrome?

It is an intestinal disorder accompanied by  symptoms like diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain. Other symptoms include anxiety, depressive disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome. If you are feeling depressed or feeling tired without any reason, then it is possible that the underlying cause may be IBS. You must consult a qualified health practitioner first, for deciding whether you really have IBS or not.

How to prepare alkaline water at home?

The simple answer is No, You don’t need an alkaline water machine. You can prepare alkaline water at home.

Method 1 Use baking soda : Add 1/8 tablespoon, approx. 500 mg baking soda to approx. 250 ml of water. As baking soda has a high alkaline content it increases alkaline properties of the water. Stir the mixture to mix baking soda thoroughly with the water. Keep aside for for few minutes. Your alkaline water is ready to use. Please note, baking soda is high in sodium, be careful if you are on a low sodium diet, You may test it’s pH level at home using pH meter or pH test strips before and after alkalization.

Method 2 Use lemons :  Take 64 oz. of clean water. If you don’t have a filter, you can surely use tap water to prepare alkaline water. Cut a medium sized lemon in slices, don’t squeeze, add the slices to the water. Cover the water and let it sit overnight at room temperature. Additionally, you can add one tablespoon of Himalayan salt if desired. In the morning your alkaline water will be ready to consume.

Method 3 Add pH drops : You can use pH drops to increase pH level of your water. You can purchase pH drops at health food stores or online. Read instructions on your pH drops bottle.

Please note that all these methods just increase the pH level of your water, they don’t help reduce or remove any impurities.
